Nottingham No M1 Widening Campaign. Submitted by:

Everyone is invited to a meeting called to set up a Nottingham
No
M1 Widening Campaign. Tuesday 18th April 2006 starts 19:30
at the Sumac Centre, 245 Gladstone Street, Forest Fields.
The government is planning a huge new roads building programme
of about 200 schemes, including the widening of the M1 to
four lanes from junctions 6a to 13 and junctions 21 to 42.
Road transport is also the single biggest contributor to the
UKs output of greenhouse gases. High levels of these
gases are causing the climate to change at a speed never seen
before in human history.
Road building destroys and degrades habitats, species, and
heritage.
Road building divides and fragments communities.
Road building contributes to health problems such as asthma.
Road building does little for the poorest in society, who
depend on public transport. Getting around, and having a secure
economy, need not involve such destruction. Local campaigns
are being set up across the country to oppose the widenning
of the M1. We are inviting individuals and groups from across
Nottingham to form a Nottingham part of this campaign. We
will be presenting information on what exactly the government
is planning on doing, and ideas for opposing it.
